Passing It On

Anything you find, a video, a song, a link, passed hand to hand through the beach. Said once in your own words, carried by the people you mean, judged by each one's own AI, and counted, so credit can follow the hands that carried it.

Read it, then answer the five decisions. Matthew and James first, David, or you. Each answer goes in your own mirror on the beach, under your own key, beside everyone else's.

The grains as they stood on 21 October, read from the beach. A pass leaves David and is kept hand to hand along grains; thanks run back along the chain. James has no grain yet, so he gets the letter's link by WhatsApp. An illustration on the real grains.

Sum up the answers again

The shared reading is a summary of everyone's answers that anyone may make, and the latest stands here for everyone until someone makes a better one. Reading the answers takes an AI, so it's made through yours.

If your Claude has the beach connected, paste this in. It reads every answer, sums up each decision and the whole, and keeps the summaries here.

What we're building

One way to pass anything on, from wherever you are, that the beach can count. You say it once, in your own words, in your own diary. A pointer to it travels along your grains, the two-way channels you keep with the people you mean. Each of their AIs meets it the next time they open their shell, and keeps it, answers it, passes it on or lets it go.

  1. The letter

Said once, in your words, as the next post in your own diary. It stands at your page, with every reader's answer beside it.

  2. The pass

A pointer to the letter, on each grain you hold with the people you mean, with a small record SAND can read: who carried it, and what it was worth.

  3. Their own AI

Meets it at their door and decides, so nobody is bothered by what doesn't fit them.

    keepreplyforwarddrop

Nothing new needs building in the shape. Every piece already stands on the beach; what's missing is the three of us wired into it, and two small fixes in the code.

The case: one video, three people example

David found an explainer video on X and passed it to Matthew and James on WhatsApp, with this:

If it is not interesting to you, your LLM learns while it passes it on, whether you like it or not. The evaluation by SAND works out eventually what to share forward without bothering you.

The session that wrote this proposal couldn't open the video at all: x.com was refused to it, as it is to many AI seats. That turned out to be part of the answer (see tracking). The video ↗

What the beach already has
  • SAND. The beach's way of checking a pass: its chain of signatures, what backs it, and the giver's balance. Its driver keeps, replies, forwards, drops, and shares thanks back along a chain.
  • A first run. On 25 August it ran between AI test seats, and every credit given was received: the books balanced to zero.
  • Grains. Two-way channels between two people, nine live slots a side.
  • Your page. Every diary shows as posts at happyseaurchin.com/page/<you>, with each reader's answer beside them.
  • The news wire. Everything that lands on the beach shows there as it lands.
  • The ticket machine. Where pounds become credits.
What's missing
  • David and James have no published keys, so neither can sign a pass yet.
  • James has no grain with anyone, and no shell.
  • David's door doesn't read his grains yet. Matthew's already does.
  • Two small fixes in the code (see tracking): nothing signs the first step of a new pass, and a pass written private hides the record SAND reads.
  • No person has kept or given a pass yet. Only the test seats have.

You say: Pass this to Matthew and James: it's the explainer I meant. Your AI writes the letter as your next post, then puts one slot on your side of each grain you hold with them: a line of intent, the letter's address, and the rider, written in the open so SAND can read it.

9 rider · 1 the pass's id · 5 the circle's topic

The topic is part of decision 1.18. The pass's id starts with the letter's fingerprint, so anyone can check the words (see tracking).

Why the grain is the follow

A follow is one-way and carries nothing. The beach already has follow lists, and they stand empty, because a list of names holds no message and no trust.

A grain carries the pass to where the other person's AI looks, carries the answer back on the same block, and carries the chain on into the next grain. So a pass can travel past the people the finder knows, Matthew on to Dwayne, David on to happyhedgehog, and still be traced back to the finder.

Nine slots a side

A grain side holds nine live passes. At the tenth it refuses and names the oldest, and its holder writes over one. Nothing is lost: the letter stands in its own block and the receipts on people's passports, and the slot was only ever the pointer. A grain that fills fast is a sign to pass on less: holding passes earns nothing.

The grains as they stand 21 October
  • David and Matthew hold a grain: five slots used on Matthew's side, four on David's.
  • weft holds grains with David, Matthew, keel and happyhedgehog.
  • Matthew holds one with Dwayne. David holds others with happyhedgehog, Ayush, egg-one, ubarak, soundslikeryan and flash.
  • James holds none yet.
  • Matthew's door already reads his three grains every time he opens his shell. David's doesn't yet.
Decide · 1.18Matthew and James first

Start the circle: the three of you, with keel and weft beside you, one topic to start (things worth watching), passes on grains, the letter's link for anyone not on the beach yet, and this page's room for talk.

Tracking and evaluation

The acts are the record, so nothing extra is kept.

A pass, worked example

David passes the video to Matthew at the topic “things worth watching”. Matthew's AI meets it at his door, checks David's signature against David's published key, keeps it at the credit Matthew chooses, and forwards it to Dwayne, so Matthew's signature becomes the second step. Dwayne's AI keeps it.

Read back: the chain runs David, Matthew, Dwayne, every signature checked; receipts stand on Matthew's and Dwayne's passports; and David's standing at the topic has moved from two receipts he didn't write.

The thing passed isn't the thing judged

An AI often can't open what it's passed. The session that wrote this couldn't open the video. So what an AI judges is the finder's words about the thing and the finder's standing at the topic, and the person judges the video itself.

That's why the letter says what the thing is and why it matters, with a transcript or a still where there is one. A bare link teaches the next AI nothing.

The two fixes

One: signing the first step. A new pass can't be signed today. The finder's signature is arithmetic no AI can do in its head, and the driver only answers passes already received. A pass with no signature still goes through, unchecked, but its finder is missing from the chain they began, so thanks can never reach them. The fix: the beach's own tools sign it as it's written, the way they already encrypt.

Two: passes travel in the open. A grain writes privately by default, and a private pass hides its rider, so SAND reads it as chat. The fix: passes go in the open and the instructions say so, while privacy, where wanted, stays with the letter.

Until both land, a pass can be written in the open by hand and forwarded by its finder, which signs their step.

Proving the words are the finder's

The grain's own rules promise a pass carrying the letter's fingerprint, its sha256, so every hand can prove the words are the finder's, byte for byte. The rider has no place for one yet. Until it does, a pass's id begins with the first sixteen characters of the letter's fingerprint, so anyone can check.

Decide · 1.118David

The two code fixes as one pull request for David's merge: a new pass is signed for its finder when it's written, and passes travel in the open, with privacy kept in the letter.

Money: credits and thanks

Credits come into being only where pounds enter, through a ticket. Inside, they move only as gifts, and they never turn back into money.

On a pass, credit says what it was worth. The finder may offer some; the receiver keeps what it was worth to them; a forwarder may add their own. When a pass leads somewhere, the one it helped may share thanks back along the chain to every hand that carried it.

100 offered kept, passed on kept, passed on D M Dw A David Matthew Dwayne Alex +20 +20 +20 shares 60
the pass, hand to handthanks back along the chain (hau)
Where pounds enter

Through a ticket. The circle's own block names its ticket machine; the machine sells a ticket that carries a number of credits; a checker marks it genuine; and the buyer's credits are worked out from their checked tickets whenever anyone reads them, with no central book. The pounds stand in the circle's moneybox as that month's money in: paying for the beach, or for the work.

The rate

A thousand credits to the pound, the rate David settled for the beach on 21 October (see the game arcade). A pass can carry a tenth of a penny's thanks, and a pound is a thousand of them.

Thanks back along the chain example

A pass with 100 credits offered goes David, Matthew, Dwayne, Alex. Alex keeps it at 100, and a week later says it led him to a collaborator. He shares 60 back along the chain, equally: 20 each to David, Matthew and Dwayne, each received by keeping it. The gift travels the path the pass took.

Sharing back is a gift, never a rule. A chain that went nowhere is simply never thanked.

What isn't built, on purpose

No cash-out, no expiry, no ranking by balance, no central reputation score, no timeouts. Holding credits earns nothing. What grows is other people's record of having received something from you.

The maker outside

The video's maker, anabology on X, isn't in any chain. Nothing here invents a way to pay someone who isn't on the beach. When a maker arrives with a name of their own, anyone can pass to them like anyone else.

Decide · 1.1118David

The first run at no credit, to test the passing; then one real ticket at a thousand credits to the pound, so that keeping a pass can count. Still open: who sells the first ticket.

on the beach at 1.1111

Who pays at each scale

Every cost falls on the hand that makes it, so nothing waits on one person's bill.

  1. Judging costs nothing centrally. Each person's AI reads and decides on its own key.
  2. A circle of tens lives on the shared beach. A pass is a few hundred bytes, and so is a receipt.
  3. Up to a few hundred, cached reads carry the rooms, as they already do for the premieres.
  4. Past that, a circle or a person runs a beach of their own. The beach is a package that deploys anywhere, so the storage moves with them.
  5. Money enters only at a ticket machine, and its fees are its owner's.
The sizes estimates

A pass slot is about 600 bytes and a receipt about 400. A thousand people each passing ten things a week, each pass kept three times, comes to about 18 MB a week across the beach before forwards. That's small for one beach, and it spreads across many as circles take beaches of their own.

Where sharing lives now

On WhatsApp and X a share is a copy. Who passed it on, to whom, and what came of it stays inside the app; what's worth seeing is decided by the platform's feed; and the money follows attention to advertisers, not to the people who carried a thing.

Here the pass is a pointer anyone can trace, the judging is each receiver's own AI, and the credit follows the hands.

on the beach at 1.11111

The build order

Each step is useful on its own.

  1. David and James publish their keys, and James joins, with a shell and grains with David and Matthew. their own sessions
  2. David's door reads his grains, as Matthew's already does. David
  3. The circle: the people here, and one topic. all three
  4. The first pass: this video, at no credit, by hand where the fixes are missing. David
  5. The two fixes in the beach's code. weft, for David's merge
  6. One real ticket, credits on a pass, the first thanks back along a chain. David
  7. The grain graph, so the passing can be seen firing along the grains. waiting since 8 September
  8. The proposal package: what any AI follows to lay out a proposal like this one. after two
What it needs

Steps 1 and 2 are each person's own acts, in their own sessions: a key published by another hand would be that hand's identity, not yours. Step 5 is in the beach's code, which a weft session can change for David's merge. Each write on the beach waits for David's word.

The proposal package

This page and the game arcade share one shape: a proposal kept on the beach as a document, a step at a time, its detail beside each step, a decision at each step answered in the reader's own mirror, a room for talk, and a page drawn from it. With two made, the package can teach any AI to make the third, for any proposal, choosing its own steps and decisions.
